Within the framework of the “Stuttgart 21” project (a traffic and urban planning project for the restructuring of the railway hub in Stuttgart) the new Neckar Bridge is currently being constructed. This 345 m-long railway bridge, with suspended pedestrian and cycle paths over the River Neckar connect Stuttgart with Bad Cannstadt. Two tram lines and two railway lines will pass over the bridge. Its “steel sail” design will make its stamp on the city landscape due to its innovative shape. The pedestrian pathway is suspended on 110 M24 tension rods. Two M30 tension rods are installed in the supporting structures.  Further three compression rod systems  are integrated into the bridge supports for cross-stabilization. The tension and compression rod systems are all in stainless steel. The adjustability of the tension rod systems enables the required height settings for the suspended pedestrian and cycle paths. The axis distance of the supports amounts to 3 meters, while the systems lengths vary between 3.5 to 5.4 meters. The bridge is to be completed and commissioned in September 2020.
